The Craftsmanship of Kyoto

Since 1823, Kyoto’s Miyawaki Baisen-an has made handcrafted fans for the imperial family, geisha, and other notable people. About 20 different processes are involved in making each fan, touched by artisans as many as 80 times before completion.

Often tucked inside the obi of the kimono, a fan is an essential part of Japanese living—used for communication, etiquette, entertainment in dances, and to simply cool off.
